West Bengal SSC Scam 2016
On Thursday, the Supreme Court delivered a major judgment in the SSC case. The highest court has finally followed the judgment of the Calcutta High Court. There have been some minor alterations in the judgment, but the Supreme Court has maintained the decision to scrap the recruitment of 26,000 teaching and non-teaching employees. The 2016 panel has been scrapped entirely. So what about these 26,000 teaching and non-teaching employees?
The apex court indicated that all those candidates who were not disqualified would be permitted to serve in the department where they were serving. Those who are clearly eligible will be permitted to serve in different departments of the state government. But that is until the new selection process is completed.
The court has directed a fresh selection process. The candidates will have to appear for the selection exam once again. In the meantime, genuine candidates will be allowed to work in their respective departments temporarily. This process will be done within three months.
There is no definite notion as of yet on how the selection process is going to be carried out and who will get a chance to sit for the exam. We will have to wait until we get the complete verdict.
The Supreme Court also stated that specially abled teachers and non-teaching staff members who were present there would be paid their salaries.

The Calcutta High Court division bench on April 22, 2024, cancelled the 2016 SSC panel on grounds of corruption. A CBI probe was also directed against the cabinet. 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff were left jobless because of the court pen. The state government, School Service Commission, and Central Board of Secondary Education approached the Supreme Court against that judgment. The case was heard in stages in the highest court. The Supreme Court had given an interim stay on the order of the Calcutta High Court on job cancellation and return of salaries. Ever since the hearings have been taking place in stages.

As per SSC notification, approximately 5,000 teachers whose names are included in the rank jump, expired panel, will not be working at present. The rest of the 20,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel will still remain working in various departments like the education department. They will receive salaries also for the next three months. They will all be required to undergo a fresh selection process.
The final hearing was held on February 10. On it, the CBI indicated that they want the Calcutta High Court’s decision in favor of the cancellation of 26,000 jobs upheld. The School Service Commission claimed that even if they have indications about rank jump or non-panel recruitments, they don’t have indications on the manipulation of the OMR sheets. The state government has indicated that if the appointments of so many teachers are canceled simultaneously, the education system of Bengal will be in ruins. After listening to the pleas of all concerned, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna deferred the verdict. He delivered the final verdict today.
The state had moved the Supreme Court appealing against the judgment of the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court. The Central Board of Secondary Education and some of the jobless had also moved the Supreme Court. The hearing of the case in the highest court came to an end on February 10. At last, the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on Thursday in the case.
