In Mirzapur’s Majhawan Assembly seat, a new leader was desperately sought to spearhead the development process. Traditionally, it was a two-party contest between SP and BJP. For this by-election, BSP has entered the fray. Here again, promises made are ‘unique’, but caste-based alignments and factionalism dominate the election process.

The by-polls are pacing up interest with the former MLA and BJP candidate Suchishmita Maurya, an MBA background against the SP’s physician doctor Jyoti Bind who is accomplished. BSP candidate Deepak Tiwari only adds to the hue and cry here for his support base to swing the vote. Each candidate is staking core claims here though caste-driven alliances in the Bind or Brahmin communities are strong here.

    Historical Challenges and New Dynamics:

The seat has not been won by the SP so far, therefore eagerly looks forward to winning the debut seat; it will be for BJP as it aims to maintain dominance in this constituency. BSP relies on the traditional Dalit vote bank and Brahmin support, resulting in a three-way contest. In the political arithmetic equation, the trappings of absence among the previous winner Dr. Vinod Bind has brought forth the rise of one Maurya.

After finishing this seat in the 2022 general elections as a coalition candidate BJP-Nishad Party, he has now risen to the Member of Parliament ranks. The exit of Bind has allowed the BJP to field Maurya; the latter, in turn, has taken a bypass on the Nishad Party and altered the traditional loyalties.

Diverse Voter Base and Strategic Alliances

Significant is the caste breakup. At an estimated 60-70,000 Dalit, Brahmin, and Bind voters, 40,000 Yadavs, 35,000 Kushwaha/ Mauryas, 25,000 Muslims, 20,000 Rajputs, and 22,000 Patels, both the parties are looking to gain from this pie. Definite views get exchanged at street corners and that local tea stall, with Bind voters ganged for by SP with all guns and Brahmins leaning toward BSP which promises to make for an important fight.

    Candidate profiles and key challenges

Dr Jyoti Bind (SP): A local doctor, from her father’s legacy, who had been a three-time MLA from BSP.

Strength: Traditional SP vote and family political legacy.
Challenge: To keep her community in one piece and ensure no sabotage from within.
Suchishmita Maurya (BJP): Former MLA with an MBA and developmental initiatives during her tenure.

Strength: Developmental record and core BJP voter base.
Challenge: Putting to rest the vote division, especially in the presence of the Nishad Party’s earlier interest in this seat.
Deepak Tiwari BSP Business leader and former GD Binani Degree College president enjoys mass appeal among Dalit and Brahmin voters. Strengths He commands a strong vote bank among Dalits, Brahmins, and youth. Challenges Keeping voters from getting eroded out of his pocket.

The Larger Stakes and Influential Leaders

This election is important beyond the candidates since it finds Union Minister Anupriya Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath vocalizing behind the BJP campaign. Locally, SP’s move to induct Shivshankar Singh Yadav, a three-term candidate from Majhawan, as its co-coordinator in Karhal, has come under question.

    Voter Stats and Gender Representation

Total electorates are 3,99,259, male voters are 2,11,105, women are 1,88,136, and third gender 18. In this by-election, caste dynamics, candidate profile, and developmental promises will be the dictating factors for the voting decision of Majhawan.
