The former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, was arrested by the CBI. However, some claimed that he was not charged in the case of rape and murder of a young lady doctor-a second-year postgraduate student of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Sources said he had been arrested in a corruption case. Junior doctors erupted in joy following that news. A junior doctor said during the Lalbazar raid that demanded the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel, ‘What the police could not do, the CBI has done.’ Another said, ‘He was arrested by the CBI. But it has not yet been removed from the West Bengal Health Department.’
After the probe into the alleged rape and murder of a young doctor-a second-year post-graduation student of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh was handed over to the CBI, Sandip was interrogated by CBI for 15 days. Every day, Sandip used to come to the CGO complex. The erstwhile principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital would reach home at night or even late at night. Meanwhile, the CBI initiated an investigation against him on charges of corruption.

Several complaints of financial fraud have been lodged by the RG Kar. The anti-corruption wing of the CBI is investigating based on that. That branch arrested Sandeep Ghosh today. Former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital Akhtar Ali leveled several serious allegations against Sandeep Ghosh. He lodged several complaints against the management of RG Kar Hospital. Already, the CBI has interrogated him.
All these points had been raised by Dr Akhtar Ali before the State Vigilance Commission and Anti-Corruption Bureau more than a year ago. But his complaints brought little result and cost him his transfer, the PTI report said. In his plea before the High Court, Ali suggested that the alleged corruption at the institution may have been connected with the trainee doctor’s death, who reportedly was in the know of these malpractices and was threatening to expose them.
Following the murder of the trainee doctor, Sandip Ghosh was asked to go on leave by the state government, but that piece of damage control did little to subdue the seemingly unending protests that erupted across the state, as doctors and the public took to the streets demanding his suspension. Protestors from across the wide spectrum of social and political circles have accused the Mamata Banerjee administration of protecting Sandip Ghosh by refusing to suspend him in time.
