In a dramatic turn of events, two key suspects involved in a murder case in Maharajganj, Bahraich, were injured during an encounter with the police near the Handa Basehari canal, close to the Nanpara bypass. The accused, identified as Mohammad Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talim, were caught after a brief shootout. A video of the incident surfaced, where one of the suspects, visibly shaken, confessed, “We were trying to escape after firing, but we won’t repeat this mistake.”

The Bahraich Encounter and the Video

The video starts with a police officer questioning the actions of the accused, saying, “You were committing a crime and even attacking the police…” To this, one of the suspects responds, acknowledging their mistake. The officer, seemingly frustrated, remarks that they were trying to bring them in peacefully, not expecting such an aggressive response from the accused.

Accused Attempted to Flee to Nepal

The Bahraich Encounter occurred near the Nepal border when the police surrounded the accused. According to ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash, the accused tried escaping to Nepal. During the encounter, the police fired back, injuring both suspects. Alongside Sarfaraz and Talim, three other suspects—Mohammad Faheem, Mohammad Hameed, and Mohammad Afzal—were also apprehended. All five were charged with violence-related offenses.

    Tight Security at Medical College

After the Bahraich Encounter, the injured suspects were initially taken to Nanpara CHC for treatment and later referred to a medical college, where heavy security was deployed. The entire area was converted into a police camp, restricting public access. Superintendent of Police Vrinda Shukla confirmed that the accused had fired at the police, leading to injuries from retaliatory fire aimed at their legs.

    Accused in Police Custody

The UP Police released a statement detailing the arrests related to the Maharajganj murder case. On Sunday, Bahraich police apprehended five suspects involved in the shooting of a young man. When police took two suspects to recover the weapons used in the crime, they were fired upon, prompting a counterattack that left the two suspects injured. Both are now receiving medical care.

    Murder Weapon Recovered

The police successfully recovered the weapon used in the murder. Vrinda Shukla emphasized that all suspects will face action under the National Security Act (NSA). Those who harbored or supported the accused would also face strict legal consequences. During the arrest, illegal weapons were found with the accused.

    Sarfaraz’s Sister Questions theBahraich Encounter

However, the Bahraich Encounter has raised questions. Rukhsar, the sister of Sarfaraz, claimed that the UP STF detained her father Abdul Hameed, two brothers, and another youth. She expressed concerns for their safety, fearing that the police might conduct an extrajudicial killing. She has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the protection of her family members.

    Akhilesh Yadav Criticizes the Government

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav criticized the Yogi government, saying, “These incidents keep happening, and it’s due to the government’s failure. To hide their shortcomings, they resort to encounters.” He argued that if encounters truly improved law and order, Uttar Pradesh would fare better in national crime statistics. He called the incident an administrative failure and questioned why the event couldn’t be handled peacefully.

    Owaisi’s Remarks on Yogi’s Policy

AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi also commented on the encounter, suggesting that the truth behind the Bahraich incident isn’t hard to discern. “Everyone knows about Yogi’s ‘thok denge’ (encounter) policy,” he said. Owaisi criticized the lack of legal action, stating that if the police had concrete evidence, they would have pursued legal sentencing for the accused.

The Bahraich Encounter and subsequent video have sparked a wave of debate, with many questioning the methods employed by the police. While the authorities maintain that the accused were attempting to flee, critics argue that such actions reflect a breakdown of law and order. The incident remains a focal point in discussions around justice and police conduct in Uttar Pradesh.
