Hemant Soren appointed as the 3rd term CM of Jharkhand
On July 3, JMM leader and former Chief Minister Hemant Soren was chosen as the leader of the ruling Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc in the legislature. Subsequently, he held a meeting with the Governor to assert the establishment of the government in the state.
Mr. Soren is soon to be reinstated as the 13th Chief Minister of the state. Following his detention in January of this year due to an alleged land scam case, Mr. Soren stepped down from the Chief Minister’s position.
Champai Soren, the outgoing Chief Minister, informed reporters outside the Raj Bhavan that “Hemant Babu has been chosen as the leader by our alliance.” Following this, Mr. Soren promptly submitted his resignation to Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan after Mr. Soren announced the government’s formation.
Mr. Soren, accompanied by the alliance party leaders, held discussions with the Governor upon his arrival in Ranchi on the evening of July 3. There are indications that the Governor might extend an invitation to Hemant Soren to be sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of the state on July 4.

Yesterday, there was a long meeting in Ranchi attended by Chief Minister Champai Soren, Congress party representative Gulam Ahmed Mir, State Congress President Rajesh Thakur, and all leaders and lawmakers from the INDIA bloc allies. During the meeting, the legislators from the ruling alliance agreed to a leadership change, endorsing Mr. Soren as the Chief Minister once again. “The meeting concluded that Hemant Soren will reassume the role of Chief Minister of the state,” stated Congress legislator Irfan Ansari from Jamtara to the local media in Ranchi before departing due to a toothache.

On January 31, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Mr. Soren in connection with a money laundering case involving an alleged land scam. A JMM legislator, opting for anonymity, stated to The Hindu over the phone that “The Governor’s invitation holds the key.”
Mr. Soren is set to be sworn in as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister for the third occasion, having previously held the position from July 2013 to December 2019. Following his release from jail on June 28, Mr. Soren convened an all-party meeting with the coalition partner legislators for the first time.
The current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Champai Soren, allegedly reacted strongly to the decision, although he later denied it. There is speculation that he may be assigned a new role as the chairman or working president of the INDIA bloc coordination committee in the state.
Following the recent Lok Sabha elections, the JMM’s representation in the 81-member Jharkhand Legislative Assembly has decreased from 47 to 45 (JMM-27, Congress-17, and RJD-1). The BJP’s presence in the state assembly stands at 24 members, as two of its legislators, Dhulu Mahto from Baghmara of Dhanbad and Manish Jaiswal from Hazaribagh, have been elected as party MPs.
“Hemant Soren has been voted for a third term as Chief Minister for Unified Command by alliance legislators and leaders ahead of the next state elections in October of this year,” said a JMM leader. Earlier, on June 28, Hemant Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court, which said, “There is reason to believe that he is not guilty of the crime,” and he was released from jail.
The temporary transfer of power to Champai Soren was nothing but a facade to make it look democratic. But they (the Shibu Soren family) will never let power go outside the family. The decision to reinstate Hemant Soren as Chief Minister has ignited a firestorm of debate and passion across the political spectrum.
Supporters of the move hail it as a triumph of justice and a testament to Mr. Soren’s leadership abilities, while critics decry it as a blatant display of dynastic politics. The JMM’s unwavering support for Soren, despite his recent legal troubles, underscores the party’s confidence in his ability to lead them through the upcoming state elections. This development has further intensified the already heated political climate in Jharkhand.
The opposition, particularly the BJP, is seizing upon this moment to paint the JMM as a party beholden to familial interests rather than democratic principles. Their accusations of dynastic politics resonate with a segment of the population that yearns for fresh leadership and new perspectives in governance.
The contrasting reactions from within Soren’s own family add another layer of complexity to this political drama. Sita Soren’s dismissive comment reveals the deep-seated divisions that exist even within political dynasties, and her alignment with the BJP adds a personal dimension to the larger political conflict.
As the state moves closer to the October elections, this latest twist in Jharkhand’s political narrative is sure to become a central point of contention. The coming months will likely see intensified campaigning, with both the JMM-led alliance and the opposition BJP sharpening their rhetoric and strategies. The electorate will ultimately decide whether Hemant Soren’s return to power is a continuation of effective leadership or a symptom of entrenched dynastic control.
A JMM leader announced that Hemant Soren has been chosen by the alliance partner legislators and leaders to serve a third term as Chief Minister for unified command in preparation for the upcoming state elections in October. Previously, on June 28, the Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Hemant Soren, stating that there was reason to believe he was not guilty of the crime, and he was consequently released from jail.
Sita Soren, Mr. Soren’s estranged sister-in-law, had joined the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections and unsuccessfully contested from the Dumka seat. She expressed her reaction to Mr. Soren becoming the Chief Minister again in place of Champai Soren, stating that Changing the face of the Chief Minister will not make any difference.
Meanwhile, Vinay Singh, a spokesperson for the BJP, commented, It is evident that once a dynasty, always a dynasty. The temporary transfer of power to Champai Soren was merely a facade to create the appearance of democracy. However, the Shibu Soren family will never relinquish power outside the family.
